Eight Nighthawks earn Region 20 academic recognition

ANNANDALE – The academic accolades continue to come in for the Northern Virginia Community College athletic department, as eight Nighthawk student-athletes were named to the NJCAA Region 20 All-Academic Team Wednesday.

The NOVA cross country team had three student-athletes named to the team, which were Cary Brown, Jenny Lyon and Lindsey Sowers. Racim Badsi and Mohamed Elnoubi from the Nighthawks soccer team also picked up the honor.

Also recognized for their work in the classroom were former student-athletes Jewels Bonnette and Mikaela Cunningham.

Andre Seadey, who had a 4.0 GPA garnered a Region 20 All-Academic Team nod after picking up an NJCAA All-Academic First Team last week.

“This is an amazing achievement by our eight student-athletes, who were named to All-Academic team,” said Director of Athletics Steve Mrowka. “These eight individuals are the poster children for what a student-athlete should be.”

Only five schools from Region 20 had eight or more student-athletes named to the team following the 2016-17 academic year. Frederick Community College led the entire region with 16 selections.
