ANNANDALE -- The 10th season of Northern Virginia Community College hockey begins Sept. 6 with a mandatory meeting starting at 8:30 p.m. and tryouts beginning at 9:40 p.m. inside Prince William Ice Center.
NOVA first took the ice in 2008, and since then has won its first Blue Ridge Hockey Conference Tournament has been victorious 30 times since the fall of 2015 and were ranked as high as 14th.
This season, the Nighthawks have 11 home games inside Prince William Ice Center, and will travel to Florida for the third straight year.
NOVA students interested in playing hockey for the Nighthawks must register prior to the tryouts in September. Following final cuts, the hockey team will do its annual retreat the weekend of Sept. 9.
There is a nonrefundable participation fee of 975 dollars for new student-athletes and 900 dollars for returning student-athletes. The participation fee for new goalies is 650 dollars and 600 dollars for returning goalies.
All student-athletes who submit their checks and completed paperwork by Sept. 1 will receive a $50 discount off their season dues. There is no discount for those who bring their season dues to tryouts.
The interest form and the participation form must be completed prior to attending an interest meeting. No student-athlete is allowed to tryout unless the recruiting form and student athlete form are completed.
Student-athlete are also required to have a physical, and the physical form must be completed by the student-athlete and health care provider before the first game.
Student-athletes will provide their equipment, but game sweaters, practice sweaters, game transportation (flights, bus, etc.), hotels, game ice, refs, practice ice, etc. are paid for by NOVA. Students are also responsible for their own meals on away games.
Participation is limited to students at NOVA, and students are encouraged to be enrolled full-time 12 or more credit hours per term. At a minimum, American Collegiate Hockey Association guidelines require nine credit hours during each term of participation. This means you must take and pass at least nine credit hours each semester and maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Currently enrolled NOVA students must have a cumulative 2.0 GPA to be eligible.
