Nighthawks can’t overcome slow start

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – On a chilly evening, the Northern Virginia Community College men's basketball team's offense could not heat up as Hagerstown downed the Nighthawks 83-69 Monday night in Region 20 play.

The loss drops NOVA to 4-4 and returns to action Thursday against Chesapeake at 7 p.m. inside Ernst Gymnasium.

The Nighthawks scored their first two points of the evening on a pair of Trevaun Hyatt free throws at the 17:28 mark. NOVA, however, could not add to its total until Frank Agyemang drained a three nearly a minute later.

Following the long range shot by Agyemang, the Nighthawks missed their next three attempts and could never gain their footing.

NOVA was plagued by turnovers in the opening 20 minutes as the Nighthawks had 12 miscues and also allowed the Hawks to score 22 second chance points. NOVA was also out rebounded in the opening stanza 28-18.

Hoping to begin the second half on fire, the Nighthawks had three turnovers in less than two minutes and they found themselves down by 25.

With 12:19 remaining the game, Hyatt scored down low, which helped to get NOVA's deficit down to 18. On the next two trips down the floor Agyemang scored four points and looked like the Nighthawks could mount a comeback.

NOVA though could not add to the momentum shift and could only draw as close as 13 late in the ballgame.
