ANNANDALE – Drew Jackson tickled the twine for 31 points and added 15 rebounds to help lift the Northern Virginia Community College men's basketball team to an 85-73 victory over Region 20 foe Chesapeake Thursday evening.
The Nighthawks are back over .500 at 5-4 and they return to action Friday, Dec. 15 against Thomas Nelson inside Ernst Gymnasium.
NOVA opened the flood gates and jumped on top of the Skipjacks 10-1 three minutes into the contest. Jackson had the Nighthawks first six points, while Michael Elliot and Tavaris James each added a bucket during the opening run.
Near the midway point of the opening half, Chesapeake got the NOVA lead down to a half dozen after going on a 15-8 run to make it 22-16
The Nighthawks, however, were able to get the lead back over 10 with 6:10 left in the stanza after James scored two more of six points on the night. The advantage would grow to 16 for NOVA late in the period after Trevaun Hyatt slammed home a bucket.
After the break, Chesapeake got its deficit into single digits, but the Nighthawks responded with a 9-0 swing to go up 53-35.
With 12:21 left in the game the Skipjacks capped off a 20-9 run and the NOVA lead dwindled down seven. However, on the Nighthawks next two trips down the floor Jackson scored a pair of buckets to push the lead back to 11.
The Skipjacks were unable to threaten anymore as they could get only get within 10 over the final 10 minutes of the ballgame.
