ANNANDALE – Led by Muhammed Saadeldeen 26 points, the Northern Virginia Community College men's basketball team swept the season series after defeating CCBC Dundalk 70-62 Tuesday night despite committing 27 turnovers.
The Nighthawks improve to 8-7 this season and return to the floor Friday at Allegany with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
NOVA ran out to an 8-0 lead after Saadeldeen scored three times and Drew Jackson added a bucket of his own. However, the Lions roared back after using an 11-3 run to tie the game at 11 with 11:08 left in the first half.
After both teams traded baskets, Dundalk held NOVA scoreless for nearly five minutes and Lions jumped on top 27-16. The Nighthawks were able to end the scoring drought on the next trip down the floor when Michael Elliot tickled the twine from deep.
In the closing moments of the first half, NOVA got as close as a point, but were not able to take the lead as Dundalk went into the locker room on top 31-30.
Tavaris James, who scored 15 points in the game gave the Nighthawks their first lead since the 10:52 mark in the first after scoring on a running jumper. The James jumper began a quick 6-0 swing for NOVA.
The Nighthawks were able to go up by as much as six with 11:31 remaining, but nearly two minutes later the Lions tied it at 51.
The teams then went back and forth for the next nine minutes before Saadeldeen gave NOVA the lead for good when he sank a bunny. The layup by Saadeldeen ignited a game clinching 11-5 run.
