ANNANDALE – Robert Tartt scored a career-high 26 points to help the Northern Virginia Community College men's basketball team past Thomas Nelson 98-83 Thursday evening inside Ernst Gymnasium.
The Nighthawks go to 5-9 this season and return to the court Monday against Region 20 foe Howard at 7 p.m.
Tartt got NOVA on the board first on a bucket down low, but TNC responded with an 8-2 run to go on top 8-4. However, Junior Kabombo and Tartt would answer for the Nighthawks to tie the game at eight.
After another NOVA basket, Gators would answer with a three to go on top 11-10 at the 16:18 mark in the first half. That would be the last time TNC would lead the game, as the Nighthawks responded with an 11-0 run.
The Gators would get their deficit down to six (24-18), but NOVA's defense would not allow them to get any closer. The Nighthawks quickly pushed their lead back over double digits, where it would remain for the rest of the half.
Less than a minute into the second half, TNC was back within nine, but a Michael Elliot trifecta gave the Nighthawks another double digit cushion.
Midway into the second period Tartt scored on an old fashion three-point play extending the NOVA lead to 72-52. Deontae Compton, who scored 14 points Thursday, pushed NOVA to a 22 point lead with under six to play.
Then, with the less than two remaining, the Gators made it interesting, as they used a 20-7 swing to get within nine (90-81). The Nighthawks though were able to finish out the game with an 8-3 game-ending run.
