HERNDON, Va. – Neil Barron and Joseph Germano each scored three goals for the Northern Virginia Community College lacrosse team Saturday, the Nighthawks, however could not overcome a 4-0 Delaware Tech run as they were downed 18-11.
NOVA falls to 1-1 this season and returns to action Tuesday at Harford for a Region 20 showdown.
Less than three minutes into the game Gio Lopez squared a shot up and gave the Nighthawks a quick 1-0 lead. With just over nine minutes left in the opening quarter, the Hawks answered with their first 4-0 run.
Playing a man up, Barron scored his first goal of the afternoon with three minutes to go. Then just before the buzzer went off Michael Hernandez took a pass from Barron and made it 4-3 after one period.
DTCC extended its lead to 6-3 before Barron hit paydirt on a pass from Hernandez. Germano and Grant Covert scored back-to-back goals to make 7-6 Hawks. A minute later DTCC pushed its advantage to two goals, but right before intermission Barron scored again.
Opening the second half, the Hawks went on a 3-0 run with the Nighthawks answering right back with goals by Germano and Christopher Worrell. Seven seconds later, however, DTCC began a quick 2-0 run to make 13-9.
Lopez scored his second goal for NOVA to make it 13-10 DTCC, but 22 seconds later the Hawks began their backbreaking 4-0 run.
