LARGO, Md. – Friday's Region 20 semifinal game for the Northern Virginia Community College was a defensive struggle, as Montgomery upended the Nighthawks 1-0 in waning moments of the match.
Early in the game NOVA sent two shots at the goal, but Juan Maraboli made two saves to keep the Nighthawks off the board. NOVA sent another shot at the net, but the Nighthawks were denied once again.
The Nighthawks defense also played outstanding as the group did not allow the Raptors to send a shot at goal during the games first 45 minutes.
Two minutes in the second half, Alex MacNabb made his first save of the day after stoning Diego Melendez-Sosa's goal.
NOVA's best chance to score came in the 66th minute when Gabriel Rickmann's shot beat the keeper, but the last defender made a toe save. Christopher Nunes gave the Nighthawks another opportunity, but his shot went high
The Raptors broke through with two minutes left when Wesley Declid's shot slipped by an out stretched MacNabb.
In the closing seconds, Rickmann sent a ball at the net, but his attempt to tie the match went wide.
