ARLINGTON – Four and a half minutes into overtime, Santiago Diez took a pass from Cristian Fuentes and drilled the game-winning goal to help the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Union County Sunday morning.
The Nighthawks improve to 7-2-0 on the season and are back in action Wednesday at NJCAA Region 20 foe Hagerstown.
Ten minutes, seventeen seconds into the match, the Owls scored the first goal of the game when Raonne Dos Santos took a deflection off the post.
NOVA's defense tightened the screws following the goal and kept Union off the board until late in the opening period. Dos Santos scored his second goal of the morning after the Nighthawks were called for a foul in the 43rd minute.
After intermission, NOVA turned up the offensive pressure and the defense kept Union off the board. At the 78:50 mark Jose Marin put the Nighthawks first goal of the day into the back of the net after he received a cross pass from Andrew Bailey.
With four minutes left in regulation NOVA tied the match when Fuentes took an Everton Bailey pass inside 10 yards to slip the ball past Union goalie Matheus Soares.
In sudden death, Union won the coin flip and took its first shot a minute into the extra session, but Andres Avila Riano made his third save of the day.
Diez, who came off the bench Sunday squeaked past the Owls defense and Fuentes found the open man for the game-winning tally.
