HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- Cristian Fuentes scored a pair of a goals to help lift the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Region 20 opponent Hagerstown Wednesday afternoon.
The Nighthawks improve to 8-2-0 this season and are back in action Tuesday, Oct. 10 at home against Cecil for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
The Hawks got two quick shots off early, but were denied. NOVA got its offense going at 24:16 when Ahmed Dahir hit the back of the net when his ball trickled past the keeper to lower right 90.
Following the goal, Everton Bailey and Gabriel Rickmann each fired the ball towards the net, but both attempts went wide in the 30th minute. Moments later Fuentes scored his sixth goal of season after beating the goalie to make it 2-0.
Seconds after the intermission, Ibrahim Bangura's shot was stoned by Hawks keeper Eduardo Araujo, who made a game-high 11 saves. Nearly three minutes later Fuentes tallied his team-best seventh goal of the season to making it 3-0.
Midway through the second period, the Hawks scored their only goal of the afternoon when Araujo found the foot of Jeison Caballero streaking down the middle of the field
The NOVA defense then took take of the rest, as the unit allowed Hagerstown to fire just two shots the rest of the match as both tries were off target.
