ANNANDALE – The Northern Virginia Community College soccer team hosts Cecil Tuesday and travels to Allegany Thursday this week for a pair of NJCAA Region 20 matches. The Nighthawks and Seahawks kickoff at 3 p.m. at Word of Grace in Herndon.
This season NOVA is 8-2-0 and holds second place in the NJCAA Region 20 Division II standings behind Montgomery.
The Nighthawks defeated Hagerstown 3-1 with a pair of goals coming off the foot of Cristian Fuentes. NOVA also outshot the Hawks 25-9. Andres Avila Riano, meanwhile, made two saves, and Joshua Fleming picked up his second win of the season.
Since the last loss
NOVA has outscored its opponent 6-3 and averages 24.5 shots per match in the 3-2 and 3-1 victories last week. Fuentes has scored three times with Santiago Diez, Ahmed Dahir and Jose Marin Obregon adding a goal each.
Setting the record
The eight victories for the Nighthawks this season broke the school record of seven set in 2015. NOVA also surpassed the school mark for the most goals in a season with 49 and had the longest winning streak in program history of five.
Between the pipes
Andres Avila Riano has won a school record six games as a goalie this season and made 19 saves in 24 chances. He made a season-high seven saves in the 3-1 victory over CCBC Catonsville Aug. 22.
Perfect from the PK
This season NOVA is a perfect 4-for-4 from the penalty kick line with Marin Obregon picking up two of the PK's.
Scouting the Seahawks
Cecil started the season 1-3-0 with the 5-2 win coming over Allegany Sept. 5. Since the victory, the Seahawks have dropped nine straight and have been shutout seven times. John Savage leads the Seahawks with three goals and Justin Gutierrez has made a team-best 52 saves.
