HERNDON – Six different members of the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team scored a goal in an 8-2 route of NJCAA Region 20 foe Cecil Tuesday afternoon at Word of Grace.
The Nighthawks improve to 9-2-0 this season and return to the pitch Thursday when they travel to Allegany for a 4 p.m. kickoff and a Region 20 Division II contest.
Nearly four minutes into the match, the Seahawks struck first when Jose Rivera headed a throw in into the back of the net making it 1-0.
NOVA then turned up the offensive juice, as Yazid Ajape fired three shots and Gabriel Rickmann added one. On the fifth try, Ajape was able to hit paydirt in the 13th minute when he took a pass from Rickmann to tie the match at one.
The contest remained knotted at one until 30:45 when Abdullah Almaari shot the ball to the cross bar and got it past Cecil's leaping goalie Kevin Makach.
Exactly seven minutes later, Everton Bailey pushed the Nighthawks advantage to 3-1 when his shot went to the lower right 90.
Less than a minute into the second half, Bailey and Cristian Fuentes hooked up to give the Nighthawks a 4-1 lead. With Bailey's second goal of the day it gave him a team-best eight scores this season.
In the 47th and 51st minute, NOVA scored on consecutive corner kicks, as Yasser Jaafary and Jose Marin headed in corners from Rickmann. Rickmann, meanwhile, finished the afternoon with a school record four assists, which gives him 11 in 2017.
To finish up the scoring for the Nighthawks, Almaari tallied his second goal of the day when he beat the keeper one on one and Ibrahim Bangura tacked on NOVA's eighth goal of the day when he shot fooled the Seahawks keeper.
