HERNDON – Two first half goals were the difference for the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team as it defeated Montgomery Friday afternoon 2-0 to grab the No. 1 spot in the upcoming NJCAA Region 20 Division III Tournament.

The nationally recognized Nighthawks finish the regular season 11-2-0 and play the winner of the Montgomery and Anne Arundel contest Friday, Oct. 27 in Arnold, Md.

Cristian Fuentes drilled the first NOVA goal of the day after taking a pass from Gabriel Rickmann early in the opening half making it 1-0.

The goal by Fuentes was the first Nighthawks tally against the Raptors since Josaphat Letona scored a second half goal in the semifinals of the Region 20 Tournament in 2015.

In the 27th minute, NOVA had the ball inside the six-yard box looking to score, but the Nighthawks were taken down hard and awarded the penalty kick. Everton Bailey took the penalty shot and he nailed his opportunity to make it 2-0.

It was up to the Nighthawks defense to take care of the rest, as the unit allowed just one shot on target for the rest of the first half. During second half play, Andres Avila Riano had to make just one stop as the other five Raptorts shots were high and wide.
