Nighthawks playing for the championship

ARNOLD, Md. – In the record book it will go down as a 0-0 tie, but the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team defeated Montgomery Friday evening in the Region 20 Tournament semifinals 6-5 in a shootout.

The Nighthawks play Howard for the region championship Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. on the campus of Anne Arundel.

In a rematch from exactly one week ago, NOVA went for the jugular early as Everton Bailey fired the first shot six and a half minutes into contest. Bailey's shot, however was stoned by Raptors keeper Jose Persoa, who made four saves.

Gabriel Rickmann and Andrew Bailey then followed the Nighthawks attack, but they were turned away empty handed just minutes later.

Near the end of the first half, Everton Bailey tried to put NOVA up by a goal, but his shot went right and the teams would end the first 45 minutes tied at zero.

With 20 minutes left in regulation, Montgomery took its first attempt to break the tie, but Andres Avila Riano kept the Raptors off the board.  The Nighthawks defense then took care of the rest, as the unit only allowed the Raptors offense to shoot off target.

During the overtime periods, Avila Riano made two of his four saves on the evening to keep the Nighthawks season alive.

Santiago Diez then tried his hand at breaking the scoreless match with less than six minutes left in the second overtime, but Persoa would deny the Nighthawks once again.

The match then went to a shootout, as both clubs went goal for goal until the Raptors sixth chance. Alec Jones stepped up for the Raptors, but his shot went wide left.

Andrew Bailey came up for the Nighthawks, and his shot scooted past a diving Persoa for the winner.
