ARNOLD, Md. – The Northern Virginia Community College soccer team gave itself opportunities, but Howard goal keeper Simon Bradford turned away six of the seven shots he faced as the Nighthawks fell 2-1 in the NJCAA Region 20 Championship Sunday afternoon at Anne Arundel.
NOVA finished the 2017 season 11-3-1, which is the most victories in program history. The Nighthawks also did not allow an opponent to score on them in 310 minutes, which lasted Oct. 10 to Oct. 29.
After the Dragons scored at 18:02, the Nighthawks turned up the offensive pressure as they fired three shots. Everton Bailey sent a shot towards goal, but was denied by Bradford and a moment later Mohammed Alkaladi's attempt was just a bit high and hit the cross bar.
After the Nighthawks were called for a handball, the Dragons took a direct kick and slid the ball under the outstretched arms of Joshua Fleming.
With under 20 minutes left, NOVA continued to test the Dragons keeper, but all three chances did not find the back of the net.
Then with 1:09 left on the clock, Marin headed the ball into the net on a feed from Gabriel Rickmann, who closed out his Nighthawks career with a school record 15 assists.
