ARLINGTON – Late in the second overtime, Abdullah Al Maari received the corner kick and headed in the game-winning goal to give the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team a 3-2 victory over Chesapeake Saturday afternoon.

The Nighthawks improve to 3-1-0 on the year and return to the pitch Wednesday at Christendom in Front Royal.

After a scoreless first half, Andrew Bailey notched his first goal of the season in the 60th minute after he took a pass from Abdullah Abdi and slid the ball past the diving goalie. However, 11 seconds later NOVA keeper Antonio Berger fouled a Chesapeake forward and the Skipjacks were awarded a penalty kick.

Less than a minute later, the Nighthawks retook the lead on their own penalty kick when Bimosan Ghimire hit the back the net.

The score would remain 2-1 until 79:58 when Philip Malta booted in a deflected shot off of Berger to tie the game up once again.

The score would stay tied for the remainder of regulation and through the first overtime.

Two minutes into the second 10 minutes, Alexandre Barbottea lined up for the corner kick and found Al Maari open on the left side of the box and headed in the shot to give NOVA its third win of the year.
