FREDERICK, Md. -- Abdullah Al Maari scored his sixth goal of the year for the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team, but four goals in the final 17 minutes pushed Frederick to a 5-1 victory Monday evening in Region 20 action.
The Nighthawks fall to 4-3-1 this season, but have a chance to bounce back Thursday against Allegany at 3 p.m.
Both teams could not get the ball in net during first half action, but it was Antonio Berger, who stepped up and made three saves in the first eight minutes.
Bimosan Ghimire, meanwhile, had the first NOVA shot on target in the 7th minute, but his scoring opportunity was turned away. Enrique Salazar then gave the Nighthawks another scoring chance, but Cougar keeper Ismael Hernandez stoned NOVA once again.
Three minutes into the second period, FCC scored first when Justin John-Langba headed in a goal on a corner kick by Jonatan Andrade.
Over the next 17 minutes, Berger stepped up and made four more saves to keep the Cougars offense at bay. On the night Berger made a career-high 11 saves.
Then in 69th minute, NOVA finally found the back of the net when Al Maari scored his 12-career goal on a pass from Isai Rivera.
Then as twilight began to set in, the FCC offense exploded and scored four times between the 71st and 88th minute to put the match away.
