NOVA soccer honored with postseason awards

ANNANDALE – Three members of Northern Virginia Community College soccer team were named First Team All-Region, while one received an honorable mention accolade Tuesday. The all-region teams were voted on by the Region 20 Division III coaches.

Earning a first team nod for the Nighthawks was Abdullah Al Maari, Oscar Cruz and Alexandre Barotteau, while Bimosan Ghmire was selected honorable mention.

Al Maari scored seven goals this season and gave a team-high five assists, as both ranked in the top five this season in Region 20. Al Maari’s 13 career goals is tied for first all-time in the NOVA record books.

Cruz and Barotteau helped anchor the Nighthawks defense as the unit allowed opponents to shoot just 18 percent and gave up just 2.5 goals per match. Barbotteau, meanwhile, also helped out on the offensive side of the field as he scored two goals and gave an assist. Cruz gave an assist and started and played nine games for the Nighthawks.

Honorable mention honoree Ghmire tied Al Maari for the team lead in goals, as Ghmire scored seven times. He also led the team with four made penalty kicks, as he hit PK’s against Southern Maryland, Chesapeake, Howard and Anne Arundel.
