KEYSER, W.Va. – Jalita Montgomery scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Northern Virginia Community College women's basketball team, but the Nighthawks could not overcome an 8-for-18 shooting performance from the line in Saturday afternoons 71-66 setback at Potomac State.
NOVA returns to action Thursday when it hosts the Catamounts inside Ernst Gymnasium at 5 p.m.
During first quarter action, Montgomery scored 10 points, while Sheila Sherrill added seven, which was part of the Nighthawks 21 points in the opening frame.
The second quarter woes continued for NOVA, as it made six field goals and was just 1-of-4 from the charity line. Montgomery nailed a three at the buzzer to bring the Nighthawks within two (38-36) at the break.
Mikaela Cunningham had the hot hand in the three period, as she nailed three shots to lead NOVA with six points. Montgomery added three points and made the only free throw for the Nighthawks in the third.
Cunningham continued her hot second half shooting as the sophomore from Anchorage, Alaska, went into double figures for the fourth time this season. Caitlyn Riley, meanwhile, tallied four of her six points in the fourth quarter.
