NOVA grabs the road win

CATONSVILLE, Md. – Jalita Montgomery finished with a team-high 18 points to help the Northern Virginia Community College women's basketball team escape with a 56-47 road victory over CCBC Catonsville Tuesday evening.

The Nighthawks improve to 5-9 on the season and are back home Tuesday, Feb. 7 against Montgomery for Student-Athlete Appreciation Night.

NOVA came out of the gates by sinking eight field goals and connecting on half of its free throws. Sheila Sherrill and Montgomery led the offensive charge as the duo combined for 18 of the teams 21 first quarter points.

The offense sputtered during the second 10 minutes, but the Nighthawks got to the line and sank all six of their charity shots. Genesis Flores, meanwhile, led the NOVA offense with six points, as she helped the team take a 35-26 lead into halftime.

Both offenses were sluggish in the third period, but the Nighthawks outscored the Cardinals 11-8. Flores again led the NOVA offense, as she scored six of her 12 points during the third stanza.

Mikaela Cunningham hit three of her four free throws, and Montgomery hit her third three of the night to finish off Catonsville in the fourth quarter. Caitlyn Riley also helped the offense as closed out her night with four of her 11 points.
