ANNANDALE – Winners of two straight, the Northern Virginia Community College women's basketball team is hoping to make it three in a row when Bryant & Stratton comes to Ernst Gymnasium Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
The Nighthawks two consecutive wins dates back to last season, while the Bobcats opened the season with a 15-point victory over Southern Maryland a week ago.
A win over Allegany
NOVA used defensive pressure in the 83-35 win over Allegany, as the Nighthawks held the Trojans to an 8-for-55 shooting performance. Offensively, Jalita Montgomery led the way with 23 points, while Lana Zjajo scored 14 points and dished a team-best five assists.
Defense is strong
In the season opener, the NOVA defense gave up just 17 points from the floor. ACM tallied 18 from the free throw line, as the Trojans were 18-for-30 from the charity stripe. The Nighthawks also forced ACM into 44 turnovers and just two assists.
Cleaning the glass
Theresa Sherrill and Montgomery combined to pull down 22 of NOVA's 69 rebounds. Every Nighthawk, who played against the Trojans grabbed at least board as the team out rebounded ACM 69-58.
The Nighthawks are heading out on a three-game road swing beginning Friday when they travel to Montgomery for the Tip-Off Classic. NOVA plays Frederick Friday and then Montgomery Saturday before heading to Patrick Henry Thursday.
Looking at the Bobcats
BSC is 1-0 this season and plays CCBC Catonsville Tuesday evening before coming to Ernst Gymnasium Wednesday.
