ANNANDALE – Nahdeyah Quarles scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Northern Virginia Community College women's basketball team, but Potomac State held on the for 63-55 NJCAA Region 20 victory Tuesday evening.
The Nighthawks fall to 0-4 this season and return to the court Saturday at Allegany for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
Natasha Porter gave NOVA a 9-4 lead four minutes into the game, but the Catamounts got hot and went on a 10-1 swing to go up 15-10 after one quarter. During the run, the Nighthawks had three turnovers and missed five shots.
The run continued into the second period for PSC, as it would build a 34-10 lead with 3:27 remaining in the opening half. During that long run for the Catamounts they held the Nighthawks scoreless for nearly eight minutes.
During second half action, NOVA turned up the pressure and forced PSC into 18 turnovers and 9-of-27 shooting from the field.
Late in the third quarter following a Porter three-point play, the Nighthawks got their deficit down to 14 (49-35). They continued the momentum and were able to draw closer in the fourth period, as NOVA got PSC's lead down to single digits after Mia Buchanon scored on a bunny to make it 57-49.
Minutes later Buchanon brought the Nighthawks within six, but with 1:22 left the Catamounts rebuilt their lead to nine. NOVA, however continued to scratch and claw, but could not get any closer than six with 15 ticks remaining.
