LARGO, Md. – Mia Buchanon became just the fourth Northern Virginia Community College women's basketball student-athlete to score over forty points in a game, as she dropped 42 in an 84-59 victory over Region 20 rival Prince George's Tuesday evening.
The Nighthawks go to 2-8 on the season and return to the floor Thursday against Hagerstown at 5 p.m. The game is going to be broadcast live on Facebook.com/NOVANighthawks.
Buchanon scored back-to-back baskets to start the game, which gave NOVA an early 4-0 lead, but the Owls rebounded and led 24-16 after one quarter.
The Nighthawks were able to get within five during second quarter play on a Buchanon three and also a free throw. NOVA would later get its deficit down to a point (30-29) on a Buchanon layup, but the Nighthawks would go cold, and PGCC ended the half on a 10-0 run.
The Owls run would continue into the third quarter, as they would lead 43-29 until Natasha Porter ended the NOVA scoring drought with a basket down low. Porter's basket coupled with the Nighthawks defense would push them to a 46-45 lead with 4:16 left in the third.
In the final quarter, NOVA's defense continued to play stout, as the unit allowed the Owls to score seven points in the period. The Nighthawks defense also held PGCC to just 3-of-21 from the field and 0-for-9 from deep in the final 10 minutes.
