ANNANDALE – Mia Buchanon scored the game-winning bucket with 18 seconds left to give the Northern Virginia Community College women's basketball team a 60-59 victory over NJCAA Region 20 Division II opponent Howard Monday evening inside Ernst Gymnasium.
The Nighthawks go to 4-10 on the season and are back on the court Monday against Montgomery at 5 p.m.
NOVA was 4-of-17 from the field in the first quarter, while the Dragons held the hot hand on 8-of-17 shooting as Howard led 18-8.
Taylor Lynch gave the Nighthawks a 2-0 lead, but Howard responded and led 13-8 late in the opening period. The Dragons then held NOVA scoreless for the final 3:21 after Nahdeyah Quarles scored down low.
During that cold spell NOVA missed all seven scoring opportunities, while the Dragons scored four times.
Early in the second frame, Lynch finally got the Nighthawks on the board as she tickled the twine on a midrange jumper making it 19-10. Lynch's jumper got NOVA's offense clicking as the Nighthawks went into halftime leading 27-26.
In the third quarter, the Nighthawks scored nine straight points as Buchanon led the charge by scoring seven of the points.
With three minutes left in the third, NOVA was still holding on to the nine point advantage, but Howard finished the period off on an 11-2 run that saw the game tied at 46 after 30 minutes of action.
Both teams traded baskets early in the fourth, but the Dragons built some momentum and led by six (55-49) with 5:13 remaining. The Nighthawks then took over the game, by outscoring the Howard 11-4 the rest of the way.
