Nighthawks send sophomores out winners

ANNANDALE – Led by Mia Buchanon's 21 points, the Northern Virginia Community College women's basketball team was a 72-65 winner over Allegany Monday evening inside Ernst Gymnasium.

The Nighthawks improve their season record to 9-12 and return to the floor Tuesday at CCBC Catonsville.

NOVA opened the game on a quick 6-0 spurt and never lost the lead, as the Nighthawks would build a 16-point advantage after Taylor Lynch scored down low to make it 37-21. However, the Trojans hit a three near the buzzer to make the score 37-24 after one period.

The Nighthawks would go continues to build on their advantage, as Lynch put NOVA up 16 right before the break. ACM, however, would cut into the lead with 13 seconds left when the Trojans drained a three to make it 37-24 at the break.

NOVA would go back up 15 after halftime, but ACM stayed close and got its deficit down to six a pair of times. The Nighthawks though would respond and go back up 10 with 1:22 left in the third, but the Trojans went on a 5-1 run to end the quarter.

With less than three minutes left in the game, ACM got within four, which as close as it had been since the opening bucket. The Nighthawks though would finish the contest 6-3 run to hold on for the win.
