Volleyball wins first five-set match

ROCKVILLE, Md. – Sheila Sherrill and Jewels Bonnette led the Northern Virginia Community volleyball team with a combined 18 kills to help defeat NJCAA Region 20 foe Montgomery Thursday night in five sets (25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 16-25, 15-6).

It was the final regular season match of the year for the Nighthawks (10-17) and they return action Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Region 20 Tournament.

After a serving error by the Raptors late in the first set, NOVA took a 16-15 lead, which turned out to be a momentum change. The Nighthawks quickly went up 20-16 after a Caitlyn Riley kill and NOVA finished it off on a 5-4 run.

The Nighthawks grabbed a quick 1-0 lead during second stanza play, but it would be their only lead. The Raptors took a 9-1 lead and never relinquished the advantage, but NOVA did get it within one at 20-19, but could regain a lead.

NOVA was down 4-1 in the third, but answered back with a momentum shifting 14-0 run, which would allow the Nighthawks to take control of the set. NOVA finished off the set with a block assist by Riley and Bonnette.

With a 3-2 in the fourth, NOVA looked to take control of the match, but Montgomery went on a 7-0 run. The Nighthawks would get the deficit down to four (20-16) after an Alexis Fields kill, but the Raptors closed the set on a 5-0 run.

Forced to go to a fifth and final set, Nikola Knapova had three straight aces to give NOVA 5-0 lead. The Raptors got NOVA's lead down to three, but two Sherrill kills finished off the match.
