NOVA splits the day

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The six-game regular season winning streak came to an end Saturday morning in a three-set loss to Northampton (23-25,22-25,22-25), but the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team bounced back in the nightcap to defeat Nassau (25-11,25-15,25-15).

The Nighthawks moved their record to 5-1 on the season and are back in action Tuesday with a pair of matches. NOVA travels to Harford to play the Owls at 6 p.m., but it begins the day with a tilt against Cecil at 4:30 p.m.

In Saturday's matches, Nikola Knapova led the Nighthawks with a combined 15 kills, while Star Mebane-Uriarte, Lauren Havill and Jessica Harris each had 10 kills on the day. As a team NOVA finished with 60 kills and averaged 10 kills per set.

Dishing the ball for the Nighthawks was Sarah Abisourour, who had 53 assists, which was good for nearly nine per set. Abisourour also led NOVA with six of the teams 10 service aces.

Defensively for NOVA it had 12 total blocks with Mebane-Uriarte anchoring the effort. She closed the afternoon with three solos and four assisted blocks, while three other Nighthawks had three total blocks.
