Nighthawks play four times this week

ANNANDALE – The Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team has a slate of three Region 20 contests, and one out of region match this week. The action for the Nighthawks begins Tuesday with a trip to Harford and concludes Friday at home against Potomac State.

The Nighthawks, who are 5-1 this season are off to their best start since the 2012 campaign when they begin the year 10-1.

Recap the weekend
Jessica Harris led NOVA with 20 kills, while Nikola Knapova, Star Mebane-Uriarte and Lauren Havill finished with a combined 52 kills to help the Nighthawks to a 2-1 weekend in the Keystone State. Sarah Abisourour, meanwhile, had 75 of the teams 87 assists.

Acing the opponents
NOVA had 19 aces over the weekend, and averaged 2.1 per set. Leading the charge from the serve was Abisourour, who nine aces Friday and Saturday.

In region action
Early in the season, the Nighthawks are sitting 3-0 in Region play. NOVA has defeated Allegany, Chesapeake and Frederick. The defense has forced its three region foes into a .000 attack percentage, while the Nighthawks offense is hitting .229 with 110 kills.

Tuesday's matches
The Nighthawks play Cecil Tuesday afternoon at Harford starting at 4:30 p.m. and finish the evening with a 6 p.m. match against the host Owls. Harford is 3-5 this season, but has won two straight, while the Seahawks are 1-1 after splitting their opening week.

Friday night in Annandale
During Friday night's action, the Nighthawks host Monroe at 4:30 p.m. and finish the weekend off against Potomac State. The Mustangs are 3-2 in the early goings of the season and play Nassau Wednesday. The Catamounts, meanwhile, are 5-3, but are 2-2 over their last four matches.
