BEL AIR, Md. – Sarah Abisourour gave 78 assists and the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team finished the evening with 99 kills as it defeated NJCAA Region 20 foes Cecil and Harford Tuesday night inside APGFCU Arena.
The Nighthawks improve to 7-1 this season and are back to work Friday when they host Monroe and Potomac State.
Game One: NOVA vs. Cecil (15-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-13)
The Nighthawks could never find their footing in the opening set and trailed by as much as 13. However, NOVA was able to gain some momentum in the second stanza and saw the set go back and forth early.
Following a Star Mebane-Uriarte kill to tie the match 13 during second set play, the Seahawks finished off the Nighthawks by using a 12-8 run.
With NOVA's back against the wall, the Nighthawks came out of gate swinging and opened up the must win set with 8-2 advantage. Cecil though got its deficit down to three (16-13), but NOVA closed things out by outscoring the Seahawks 9-7.
Over the final two sets, the NOVA smacked 18 kills and forced Cecil into 11 attack errors, while picking up four service aces to earn its 10-straight victory over the Seahawks.
Game Two: NOVA at Harford (28-26, 17-25, 25-20, 25-21)
In the nightcap, the Nighthawks continued their hot streak as they won the opener behind a pair five kills performances from Knapova and Mebane-Uriarte. Stephanie Burns, meanwhile added four kills and hit .667.
Errors bogged NOVA down in the second set as it had six reception errors and two service mistakes. As a team NOVA hit just .029 and had eight kills and seven attack errors.
Twenty-six kills are what the Nighthawks used in the third and fourth stanza to finish off the Owls in four. Defensively NOVA forced Harford into 12 attack errors and a combined eight reception and service errors.
