Nighthawks can’t hang on

BOLIVIA, N.C. -- The Northern Virginia Community College dropped a five-set match to Cape Fear Thursday evening in the Gore Center. The Nighthawks were led by Nikola Knapova, who had 18 kills, but they could not hold off the Sea Devils (29-27, 25-18, 25-27, 22-25, 13-15).

NOVA falls to 8-5 and returns to action Friday against Patrick Henry and Spartanburg Methodist in the Pitt Community College Invitational in Greenville, N.C.

The Nighthawks smacked 17 kills in the opening set and added 11 during the second stanza to take 2-0 lead in the match.

During third set action, NOVA had 13 kills, but were called for four ball handling and four block errors. Over the final two sets, the Nighthawks could not get its offense going as they had just 12 kills.

Individually, Sarah Abisourour had a career-high 44 assists to help the NOVA offense, while Star Mebane-Uriarte led the way with four solo blocks.
