Short week for Nighthawks

ANNANDALE – With only one game on the slate this week, the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team hits the road for an NJCAA Region 20 contest at Anne Arundel Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Nighthawks are 11-12 in 2017, while the Riverhawks come into the contest with a 1-14 mark this season.

Recap the weekend
It was a tough weekend for NOVA in North Carolina, as the Nighthawks went 0-4 – falling to Lansing, Cape Fear, Saint Clair County and Bob Jones. As a team NOVA had 137 kills and hit .089 Friday and Saturday.

The schedule ahead
Following the AACC match, the Nighthawks have nine days off before returning to the court Thursday, Oct. 19 at CCBC Essex. NOVA returns home for Sophomore Night and the final game of the season Thursday, Oct. 26 against Howard

Tough stretch
Since starting the season 7-1, the Nighthawks have gone 4-11 with wins over Hagerstown, Surry, Patrick Henry and Montgomery. During the stretch, NOVA has been led offensively by Nikola Knapova, who has 136 kills, while Star Mebane-Uriarte is hitting .347 with 107 kills.

On the mark
In the 11 wins this season, Sarah Abisourour has given 332 assists and the Nighthawks have smacked 435 kills. NOVA averages 1.22 blocks per set in victories and Mebane-Uriarte leads the way with 11 solo blocks.

Scouting the Riverhawks
Offensively for AACC, Cailin Jones leads AACC with 45 kills and is second with nine solo blocks. Setting the offense for the Riverhawks is Brighde Williamson and Sarah Jackson, who have a combined 114 assists.
