ANNANDALE – Behind a .292 attack percentage, the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team made quick work of beltway foe Howard Thursday evening in NJCAA Region 20 action.
The Nighthawks improved to 17-12 after sweeping the Dragons, 25-14, 25-19, 25-17 and now prepare for the postseason at Garrett College.
Nikola Knapova, who had six kills in the first set helped lead the NOVA attack, as the team hit a staggering .462. The Nighthawks never saw the Dragons get closer than a point (3-2) and eventually went up by 10 late in that stanza.
The second set was a closer contest, as Howard led 13-9 following an ace. The Nighthawks, however, regrouped and grabbed an 18-16 advantage after two straight Dragon attack miscues. NOVA finished the set on 7-2 swing that was aided by two Knapova kills and a Symone Jenkins ace.
Tied 5-5 in the final set, the Nighthawks opened the flood gates after Stephanie Burns laid the smack down on a kill, which began a 13-5 run. During the momentum shifting run, NOVA had six kills and an ace by Katy Garrity, while Howard hit five attack errors.
After a recalculation of matches, the Nighthawks were awarded the top seed in the upcoming Region 20 Tournament, which is set for Nov. 4-5 in McHenry, Md.
