Four Nighthawks named all-region

ANNANDALE – The 2017 NJCAA All-Region 20 volleyball team was announced Tuesday and was voted on by the region head coaches. The Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team earned four selections.

Setter Sarah Abisourour earned a first team accolade, while Star Mebane-Uriarte and Nikola Knapova garnered a second team honor with Sylvia Cendeno picking up an honorable mention nod.

Abisourour, who led the region in assists with 965 gave 90 in the three matches at the NJCAA Region 20 Tournament. Six times during the season, Abisourour gave over 40 assists with a career-high 48 coming against Lansing.

Meabne-Uriarte, meanwhile, was sixth in the region in kills and solo blocks, as she smacked down 227 kills and returned 29 opponent attack attempts as a freshman. Against Frederick in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region 20 Tournament, Mebane-Uriarte had a season-high 15 kills.

For Knapova it was the second time in her Nighthawks career she picked up a second team all-region honor. She was second in D-II in kills with 301 and against D-II foes in 2017 she had 94 kills to lead the Nighthawks.

Cedeno was one of four Nighthawks to finish the season with over 200 digs and she led NOVA with 3.04 digs per set. She also closed out the 2017 with 15 service aces, which was tied for fourth on the team.

"I am proud of these four young ladies," said head coach Marcus Robinson. "They worked hard this season and they, along with the entire team helped us earn the top seed in the NJCAA Region 20 Tournament and advance to the region finals."
