LA PLATA, Md.—Brittany Connatser carried the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball teams offense to help lead the Nighthawks to a straight set (26-24, 25-18, 25-20) victory over Frederick in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region 20 Tournament.
The Nighthawks have won five straight and take on Potomac State in the semifinals Saturday at 11 a.m. inside the CSM Gymasium.
In opening set action, NOVA trailed 14-8 following a Connatser error, but a Samantha Acevedo kill started a 7-2 swing that tied the stanza at 16. FCC, however retook the momentum and led 22-18.
A few points later, the Cougars were on the verge of taking the set, as they led 24-21 on a Leslie Pamer kill. Then on FCC's next offensive attack, Keirra Shaffer smacked the ball into the net, which woke up the Nighthawks.
The Nighthawks continued its hot streak in the second stanza, as they led 10-4 in the early goings. The Cougars then grabbed the momentum and answered with a 10-4 run that tied the set at 14.
NOVA though did not allow the Cougars to take the lead, as the Nighthawks wrapped up the second on a 11-4 run.
An Abisourour kill gave the Nighthawks a 5-0 lead in the decisive third set, but FCC would not go down quietly. The Cougars would take the lead at 11-8, but NOVA regrouped and following three straight FCC attack miscues, NOVA was on top 21-14 and would eventually go on to win 25-20.
