Cross country awarded for work in the classroom

ANNANDALE – With a team grade point average of 3.29, the Northern Virginia Community College cross country team earned the 12th best GPA in the nation for the 2016-17 academic year. El Paso Community College had the highest team GPA in the country at 3.70.

NOVA finished the year just one-hundredth of a point from the top 10, as Allen County and Lansing community colleges tied with a 3.30.

"My team works hard in the classroom, and to finish the year with 12th best GPA in the country is amazing," said head coach Nicole Mancini. "My goal next year is to have my team reach the top 10."

The Nighthawks, who won their third straight NJCAA Region 20 championship also ran in their second consecutive NJCAA National Championship last fall. NOVA had 10 runners finish the season and all 10 student-athletes closed out at least one semester with a 3.0.

Following the fall semester, the cross country squad was one of 26 teams to win the Academic Team of the Year. Cary Brown, Jenny Lyon, Lindsey Sowers and Katherine Stencavage won the Scholar All-Americans award after the fall semester as well.
