Nighthawks finish 35th at nationals

FORT DODGE, Iowa –Kmaljeet Athwal led the Northern Virginia Community College cross country team Saturday at the 5K NJCAA National Championship, as she helped the Nighthawks to a 35th place finish.

Iowa Central won the team title along with individual championship as Adva Cohen crossed the line in 17 minutes, 24.4 seconds.

Athwal, meanwhile, finished in 96th with a school record time of 20:09.80, which was 10 seconds better than her time one month ago at the Hagan Stone Classic.

Emily Compton was the next Nighthawk to finish the race, as the sophomore from Alexandria ended her afternoon in 21:48.60. Abby Collins trailed Compton, as Collins was 224th after finishing the race with a time of 22:09.10.

Sarah Dierlam was just two seconds off of a personal-best, as the Charleston, S.C., native clocked in at 22:41.80. Not far behind Dierlam was Joanna Rohrbach, who was done in 23:13.60, which was her best time at NOVA.

Rounding out the NOVA runners was Meili Wood and Berith Austin, who were 297th and 298th respectively. Wood had a time of 25:31.20 and Austin was just a second behind Wood at 25:32.60.
