Nighthawks finish sixth at Mary Washington


FREDERICKSBURG – The Northern Virginia Community College cross country team finished sixth at the 4K UMW Opener Friday night to begin the regular season.

The Nighthawks, who finished with 155 points were 10 behind NCAA Division II Virginia Union for fifth and 32 behind fourth place NCAA Division III Marymount.

Leading NOVA was Kmaljeet Athwal, who crossed the line in 16 minutes, 22.6 seconds, which was good for the 16th place. Athwal was a minute, 22 seconds behind the winner Monica Lannen of Christopher Newport.

The next Nighthawk to end her run was Ashlianne Shigley, who finished in 44th place as she ended her evening with a time of 19:26.90.  Berith Austin (21:05.10) followed Shigley, as the Manassas, native finished in 49th.

Rounding out the NOVA runners was Dana Fusco (28:10.70) and Lauren Proctor (31:30.80), who were 56th and 57th respectively.
