ANNANDALE – The Northern Virginia Community College hockey team has announced a tryout date for the 2019-20 season that will take place Sept. 4, at 8 p.m. inside Prince William Ice Center with a mandatory interest meeting set for Aug. 14 at the Annandale Campus room CA302 at 8 p.m.
NOVA students interested in playing hockey for the Nighthawks must register prior to the tryouts in Sept. and attend the interest meeting in. Those who make the team must participate in a mandatory team retreat Sept. 7 (please bring $20 to this event).
All hockey student-athletes will be required to pay a participation and fundraising fee for the 2019-20 season. The fee amount for new student-athletes for the year is $1400 while returning player dues are $1000. New goalies, meanwhile, will pay $750 and returners are $650.
Student-athletes will not be able to try out unless season dues are paid and a physical is completed prior to Sept. 4. Potential student-athlete cannot tryout unless the recruiting form and student-athlete assumption of risk form are completed. The forms can be completed at the interest meeting or bring to the tryout.
Student-athletes will provide their own gear, but game sweaters, practice sweaters, game transportation, hotels, refs, and practice ice are paid for by NOVA.
Participation is limited to students at NOVA, and students are encouraged to be enrolled full-time 12 or more credit hours per term. At a minimum, American Collegiate Hockey Association guidelines require nine credit hours during each term of participation. This means you must take and pass at least nine credit hours each semester and maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Currently enrolled NOVA students must have a cumulative 2.0 GPA to be eligible.
The Nighthawks will have a new home in the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League for the upcoming 2019-20 season.
