WYE MILLS, Md. – Joe Davis scored 21 points during the second half to help bring the Northern Virginia Community College men's basketball team back and defeat Chesapeake 96-93 in overtime Wednesday evening in NJCAA Region 20 play.
The Nighthawks even their record at 1-1 and return to the court this weekend against Potomac State and Beaver County in Keyser, W.Va.
NOVA could not find any offense during the first 20 minutes, as the Nighthawks shot 28 percent from the floor and were 1-of-11 from deep. The Skipjacks, meanwhile, held a hot hand from outside as CC was a blistering 7-for-15.
After both teams missed their opening shots in the second half, Davis sparked the Nighthawks with a deep three to make 44-28 Skipjacks. That shot started a 28-11 run that went nearly 10 minutes and gave NOVA a 56-55 lead.
With five minutes left, Davis gave NOVA a five-point advantage at 68-83, but a Skipjacks went on a 13-8 run and forced overtime.
In overtime, a layup by Robert Tartt gave the Nighthawks an 85-80 lead, and then moments later Emmanuel Miller pushed it to 87-80. That seven-point lead was enough for the Nighthawks and they held on to the three-point road win.
