Nighthawks go cold in second half

BALTIMORE – Tavaris James scored 13 points to lead the Northern Virginia Community College men's basketball team, but cold shooting in the second half lifted Monroe to a 78-46 victory in the Legends Classic.

The Nighthawks fall to 1-4 on the season, and return to action Saturday against CCBC Catonsville at 3 p.m.

NOVA's defense forced the Mustangs into 14 turnovers during the opening half and were down just eight (32-24) at the break. Also keeping the Nighthawks in the game was Monroe's shooting at the line, as the Mustangs were just 3-for-13 from the charity stripe.

In second half action, NOVA connected on 23 percent (9-of-39) from the field and seven percent (1-for-14) from beyond the arc. Deontae Compton and James, meanwhile, combined to score 13 points and pull down four rebounds to top the Nighthawks.
