Nighthawks hang on for sixth straight

ARNOLD, Md. –Robert Tartt scored 24 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for the Northern Virginia Community College men's basketball team in Saturday evenings, 78-74 victory over Anne Arundel.

The Nighthawks sixth consecutive victory moves them to 9-9 on the year before heading into the final home game Monday evening against Allegany at 7 p.m. The Sophomore Night proceedings begin prior to tipoff.

In the first half, the game was tied six times and there were five lead changes until Terrell Walker scored on a layup to give NOVA a 27-26 lead with 5:20 to go. Those two points by Walker gave the Nighthawks the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Twice in the second period, Walker and Tartt gave NOVA a 10-point cushion at 50-40 and 56-46 respectively. The pesky Riverhawks, however, answered with a 7-0 run that saw the Nighthawks lead dwindle down to three (56-53) with 8:23 left in the game.

NOVA responded with a 10-2 swing that put them on top by 11 with just under six minutes remaining. The Nighthawks though were not able to add to that advantage, as AACC got within three (77-74) with seven ticks left.

Then with one second on the clock the Riverhawks fouled Tartt, who he hit the back end of two free throws put the game out of reach, and secured the win for NOVA.
