LARGO, Md. –Josh Cornwell scored shortly after halftime to bring the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team within one, but Prince George's hung on to down the Nighthawks 3-1 in NJCAA Region 20 play.

NOVA falls to 2-8-1 this season and returns to action Thursday at the College of Southern Maryland beginning at 3 p.m.

The Nighthawks spotted the Owls a two-goal lead in the games first 18 minutes, but the defense stepped and halted the PGCC attack.

NOVA's defense did not allow the Owls to get off another shot in the first half. The Nighthawks offense, however, peppered the PGCC goalie as NOVA's forced Johnathan Claros to make three saves in the final 20 minutes of the half.

Opening the second stanza, Gabriel Rickmann sent his shot high and then minutes later Cornwell hit the back of the net after Leland Jameson original shot was deflected by Claros.

Six minutes later, PGCC got its goal back to make it 3-1, but the Nighthawks attack continued to wreak havoc on Claros.

At the 75th minute Battal Karamese looked at though he hit paydirt when he headed the ball past Claros, but Karamese was whistled for an accidental handball.

On NOVA's next trip down the field, Karamese got another one on one chance against Claros, but Karamese was called for offsides and the goal was taken off the scoreboard.

The Nighthawks did not give in as the offense continued to fire shots at Claros. Keyvan Montero and Cornwell sent shots towards the goal, but they weren't able to get them past Claros in the final five minutes.
