Nighthawks fall in close one

LARGO, Md. – An early goal was the difference Thursday afternoon, as the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team dropped a heartbreaker 1-0 to NJCAA Division III Region 20 foe Prince George's.

The Nighthawks fall to 1-1-0 this season and return to the field Saturday, Sept. 7 to take on Christendom.

Emmanuel Vargas made eight saves in nine opportunities for NOVA and the only goal he allowed came in the ninth minute when Miguel Rosales Romero scored on a penalty kick. Vargas has made 19 saves through two games this season.

Following the Owls early goal, Bryan Kanaan had a shot in the 18th and 19th minute, but he came away empty handed.

In the second half, Danny Aviles had a scoring chance, but he was turned away by PGCC goalie Austin Geier, who made six saves.

Then with time ticking away, Josh Spiro gave the Nighthawks their last good look at the net, but Geier made another stop to keep the whitewash intact.
