Nighthawks come up short

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Northern Virginia Community College soccer team played a man up for the last minute of the game, but the Nighthawks could not take advantage as Frederick escaped with the 1-0 victory on a cloudy Saturday afternoon.

The Nighthawks fall to 1-2-0 and are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Christendom for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Cougars had 11 total shots in the first half, but Nighthawks keeper Emmanuel Vargas kept FCC guessing as he made six saves for NOVA. The Cougars continued firing shots late in the first half, as they sent three shots towards the net, but the Nighthawks defense kept FCC attempts off the mark.

Early in the second half, Matthew Pazmino's attempt for NOVA went wide and then Enrique Dentone's shot was stoned by Ismael Hernandez. A few minutes later Tobias Harris had a look at the net, but his shot was wide.

Then in the 68th minute, the Cougars scored what proved to be the game-winner when Vagner Marques slide a shot just past  Vargas.

After NOVA gained the man advantage in the final seconds due to a double yellow, the Nighthawks pushed the ball into the attacking zone but could not get a clean shot off and FCC held on for the win.
