Nighthawks lose footing in second half

PETERSBURG, Va. – Jack Carroll scored three first half goals, but it wasn't enough for the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team as Richard Bland scored eight unanswered tallies to win 8-4 Tuesday afternoon.

The Nighthawks are 1-5-0 this season and return to the pitch Saturday at Allegany for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

In the 18th minute, NOVA struck first as Daniel Kwadwo's pass found Carroll's foot on the far side of the field to make it 1-0. Ten minutes later, Carroll hit the back of the net again, this time he was fed on a pass from Enrique Dentone and Nacer Molato.

Caroll wasn't done scoring for the Nighthawks as he became the first NOVA soccer student-athlete to score three times in game pushing the lead to 3-0.

Five minutes later it was 4-0 Nighthawks, as Ismael Ayala scored his fourth goal of the season on a pass from Carroll and Molato.

Then right before halftime, RBC erased the shutout when Gorka Delgado headed in the ball to make it 4-1.

In the 52nd minute, RBC was pushing the ball into its attacking third when a pass hit the outstretched arm of a NOVA defender and the Statesmen were awarded a penalty kick. RBC made good on the penalty kick and proceeded to score six more times in the second period.
