ANNANDALE – Looking for a much-needed victory, the Northern Virginia Community College soccer team found it Tuesday behind a pair of goals from Jack Carroll and Ismael Ayala, who led the Nighthawks to a 5-3 victory over Potomac State.
With the win, NOVA improved its 2019 mark to 2-5-0, and returns to action Thursday at Anne Arundel.
The Nighthawks wasted no time getting on the board when Carroll took a pass from Bryan Kanaan 51 seconds into the match to give NOVA a 1-0 advantage. However, it took PSC less than 15 minutes to tie the contest and another 15 to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Five minutes into the second half, Ayala hit the equalizer on a shot that went to the high post and then Carroll gave the Nighthawks a lead once again in the 71st minute when he had an open shot inside the box.
The Catamounts wouldn't go away, as they scored at 75:05 to make it 3-3, but over the final 10 minutes Ayala hammered home his second tally of the day and then Oscar Salamanca scored his first goal of the year and the final Nighthawks goal.
Carroll and Ayala lead NOVA in goals this season, as the duo has each scored six times.
