ARNOLD, Md. – Mia Buchanon led the way with 23 points, while Natasha Porter added 14 to help the Northern Virginia Community College women's basketball team to a 68-54 victory over Anne Arundel Saturday afternoon.
The Nighthawks return to their homecourt for the final time this season Monday when they welcome Allegany to Ernst Gymnasium for Sophomore Night starting at 5 p.m.
Early on, AACC led NOVA 7-2, but the Nighthawks fought back and took an 8-7 lead on a Nahdeyah Quarles jumper. The Riverhawks, however, scored down low moments later to regain a two-point advantage.
Then on NOVA next trip down the floor, Porter answered from deep to give the Nighthawks the lead for good. NOVA was able to build an advantage by as much as 12 twice late in the opening frame on baskets by Tiya Anderson and Taylor Lynch.
The Riverhawks though cut the Nighthawks lead down to six (27-21) two minutes into the second period. NOVA was able to respond, and got its lead by back over double digits (38-26) on Buchnanon's midrange jumper.
NOVA continued its strong performance in the second half, as the team hit its biggest lead (66-46) of the afternoon midway through the fourth on Porter's jump shot.
The Nighthawks also dominated the glass in the second half, as they outrebounded the Riverhawks 30-21. NOVA also picked up five steals during the second 20 minutes of action, which includes two by Quarles.
