Nighthawks make quick work of AACC

ANNANDALE – Lauren Havill had 10 of the teams 38 kills to help pace the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team to a sweep over Anne Arundel Thursday evening inside Ernst Gymnasium.

The Nighthawks start the season 1-0 after downing the Riverhawks in straight sets 25-17, 25-8, 25-8.

NOVA, who is coming off of a Region 20 Division II championship match appearance began the first set sluggish. The Nighthawks committed six service errors and had three bad reception mistakes, but they overcame the miscues in part to Havill and Brittany Connatser's six combined kills.

During second set action, the NOVA defense shined as the unit had two blocks and held the Riverhawks offense to a -.120 attack percentage. Alyssa Mielke had a solo block, while Deveis Wooten and Sydney Nixon each had an assisted block.

Newcomer Audrey Bartels, along with returnees Sarah Abisourour and Havill each had three kills in the final stanza. As a team, the Nighthawks hit. 346 and had just five attack errors in 26 attempts.

This weekend NOVA travels to the Empire State to play three matches against Queensboro, Nassau and Northampton beginning Friday.
