LA PLATA, Md. – Deveis Wooten and Brittany Connatser combined to smack down 23 kills to help lead the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team in a straight set (25-9, 25-19, 25-22) victory over Potomac State Saturday morning in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region 20 Championship
The 16-12 Nighthawks will put their six-match winning streak on the line at 4 p.m. against undefeated and 19th ranked Montgomery.
NOVA was on top of its game in the first set, as the Nighthawks hit .556 and had eight service aces. The Catamounts, meanwhile, struggled and hit -.167 finishing with six attack errors and just four kills.
In the second set, NOVA and PSC were in a tight battle, as the Nighthawks led 11-8 early, but following a Catamounts attack miscue, NOVA swung the momentum. During the shift, the Nighthawks answered with a 5-1 that put the stanza out of reach.
The Catamounts and Nighthawks were again locked in a tight battle during third set action. PSC was looking to close the set out and force a fourth, but the Nighthawks shifted the momentum and took a lead late (22-21), and were able to hold on.
For the Nighthawks it is their second straight appearance in the championship match of the Region 20 Tournament. NOVA has advanced to the championship contest four times since becoming a varsity program in 2012.
