ANNANDALE – The Northern Virginia Community College volleyball and cross country teams begin the 2019 this week, while the soccer squad heads to Prince George's for a late Thursday afternoon match with the Owls.
Thursday, Aug. 29
3 p.m. – Soccer at Prince George's
7 p.m. – Volleyball at Chesapeake
Saturday, Aug. 31
10 a.m. – Cross country at Howard University
The Nighthawks were victorious in their season opener over Hagerstown 3-2, as Jack Carroll scored the match-winner in the 76th minute. Emmanuel Vargas made 11 saves in his NOVA debut, which includes two in the final 14 minutes.
A season ago, the Nighthawks and Owls tied 2-2 as Enrique Salazar and Alexandre Barbotteau each tallied a score for NOVA.
The 2018 NJCAA Region 20 champions return to the court Thursday for the first time this season at Chesapeake. The Nighthawks and Skipjacks have not met since 2018 when NOVA took the match in straight sets.
In that match two seasons ago, the Nighthawks hit .408 and had 14 service aces as Sophia Duff had a match-high five.
New head coach Josh Merck opens up his first season Saturday at the Howard University Labor Day Classic. The Nighthawks return one runner from last season's roster -- Lauren Proctor, who ran all five races and placed 13th in the NJCAA Region 20 Championship.
